Entrepreneurship Story

Having worked for nike for over a year now, I've had the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the man behind the brand Mr.Phil Knight. I got into the company through my aunt, who has a much bigger role in Nike than I, a cashier, do. She had gotten a call to head down to Beaverton, Oregon, where headquarters are located for a meeting of all store managers, and offered to take me up there. Obviously, I would have no part in the meeting, but as an employee, Nike offers the opportunity to tour the headquarters also known as "campus". The place is enormous and the buildings are of course state of the art. As a tour member, we're advised not to act out in any way when seeing a Nike athlete and to leave them unbothered. I obviously, was picturing seeing someone such as Lebron James or maybe even Serena Williams. Instead, I seen someone much larger in terms of Nike hierarchy- the founder. It was really brief, and I won't embellish it into something it was not, I simply saw Phil Knight grab a cup of coffee and walk out a side door. That was it. My aunt actually saw him first and pointed him out and I froze and stared at the man. I remembered how to act, but man was it hard. For someone who's into sneakers and sports and just about everything Nike this was monumental. I was astonished and literally stood still and watched a stranger fill his cup of morning joe, before heading onto much bigger and better things. I ultimately wished I could have snagged a picture with him or at least gotten a handshake, but nonetheless this made the trip to campus worth-it.

I chose to enroll in ENT3003 because yes, it is part of my major requirements, but also because it is something that interests me. All throughout high school, I struggled with deciding a major while everyone else I knew seemed to have already have their whole life planned out ahead of them. Also, no matter where I seemed to look I would see people like Elon Musk or companies such as Nike or heck, even Kanye West, introduce something that people get excited over and talk about. For some reason, this always interested me and is the major reason I chose to take this course.

  1. Hey Josh,
Nike is a company that is constantly growing and I can definitely see how you believe this is a market you could excel in. Under Armor and Adidas used to seem like they were catching up with them, but in the last few years that has completely surpassed them. For example, the NFL and NBA both have their jerseys sponsored by Nike and it's by far the best they have ever looked.
