Bug List

Bug List

1) Pennies- The idea that one cent is crucial to our economy is pretty outrageous. Especially,
when the rest of our coins are divisible by 5. There's way too many of them in production, and most people don't even value them. In fact, they throw them either on the street or in fountains for the heck of it. Simply put, pennies are a waste of copper that are of little value to the American citizen and make my life, as a cashier, that much harder.

Why do pennies exist? Truthfully, the only argument going for pennies is precision. They provide us with a more precise way of counting money. They also showcase honest Abe in all his glory, which is cool I guess but quite frankly, I can do without.

2)Soap pumps/dispensers that don't pump the leftover soap at the bottom- This really applies to all dispensers that don't supply me with all the soap that I paid for. Instead, the little amount that is at the bottom doesn't get used or I have to take the dispenser nozzle out and wait for gravity to do its trick and make the soap fall.

Why do soap pumps ineffectively pump ALL the soap? I think its because they only have one entry tube for the soap that lies vertically so if any of the soap goes to a corner or side (which it does, it always does) then they're a loss cause.

3)Apple iPhone charger chord fraying- The more I use a phone charger the more damage I seem to cause. It happens to every charger I use and the wires always end up exposed no matter how hard I try. Nonetheless, I'm pretty sure its a safety hazard.

Why do iPhone charger chords fray? The part that frays is the closest to the part that goes into the phone. It frays because the material bends and overtime the rubber or whatever wears out and exposes the wire.

4)The bread bag ties- The little things that are so hard to keep track of that wrap around to seal the bag. Also, I can never tell which way they're going and often times I don't use them again I just twist the bag tight.

Why are bread bag ties used? They help keep the bread fresh and delay the time it takes for mold to set in, but honestly I think Ziploc would do the trick

5)Wide ruled paper- In all my years of schooling, I have never been required to use wide ruled paper. It has always been college ruled and i'm not even sure why someone would prefer wide ruled over college ruled. It's something that I mistakenly purchase only when I need college ruled and I don't see why different space size is required.

Why does wide ruled paper exist? Wide ruled paper exists for people with big handwriting
in order to help their handwriting cleanliness and appearance.

6)When my shower runs out of hot water- It totally ruins a shower when you no longer have control over the water temperature.

Why do showers run out of hot water- the water heater just doesn't have that large of a supply of hot water. Over use of hot water.

7)Traffic time on the Turnpike- Nobody like 5 o'clock traffic and it happens everyday regardless of where your coming from. It just eats up time and prevents you from getting to where you're supposed to be by the time you're supposed to be there.

Why does 5 o'clock traffic happen everyday? Thats the time most people get out of work, and they all plan on going to their home or the store or picking up their kid.

8)The entire Love-bug community- truthfully speaking, if there is one species on the entire planet we could wipe out- this would be the one. They do literally nothing and are seasonal bugs for a reason.

Why do Love-bugs exist? I guess they are food to some other animal, they're a part in keeping the ecosystem stable.

9)Bathroom door handles/locks that don't say occupied or vacant- There really needs to be more of these things that way no one has to have that awkward encounter of walking in on someone.

Why don't all bathroom handles have the occupied/vacant sign? Aesthetics is really why places don't display them

10)Lack of cashiers at target- the amount of checkout lanes they have drastically outnumbers the amount of eligible cashiers they have. It's honestly misleading, and gives us target customers false hope.

Why are there never enough cashiers at target? Job specialization, maybe only a hand full of employees are chosen to lear the registers. Zone coverage may be planned out poorly.

11)YouTube ads lying about the amount of ads- its bad enough I have to watch ads as it is, but it's 10x worse getting surprised with extra ads after already watching the required amount.

Why ads? I get that it's a paid sponsorship and thats why there's ads in the first place, but honestly I think it's just a glitch

12) How Starbucks calls orders out by name- It can easily lead to confusion if people share the same name or if the employees misspell/can't pronounce what they wrote. The number system just seems simpler to me

Why do they call names? I can only see them justifying that it makes the experience more personal

13) When one airpod dies and the other one doesn't- This happens all the time even though i use them both the same amount of time and they spend the same time together in the same charging case

Why does one always die? It could be a manufacturing problem, maybe i'm not placing them in the case correctly (although I think I am), could be someone else coming along and only using one of my airpods when i'm unaware of it

14) When someone's driving in my direction with their high-beams on- really annoying and makes my drive at night, that much more difficult

Why do people drive with their high-beams on towards traffic? Maybe they really cannot see the road, they might be unaware of it, they might just decide thats how they wish to see the road at night and not care or think of the other drivers

15) When my socks get wet- Whenever it rains and my shoes get wet, or i step in a puddle, or a puddle gets splashed on me and inevitably my socks get soaked. Not only does my shoe get ruined on the outside, but also on the inside so its really 2 birds with 1 stone

Why do my socks get wet? I wasn't equipped with proper shoes or I was wearing high socks and they were exposed to the water

16)Hangers stretching out the necks of shirts- Its one of those things were it depends on the shirt I know, but it also seems to happen to the shirts i least expect it too.

Why do hangers stretch out the neckline? The shirt may be damp and put out to dry or if you pull too much on a shirt to take it down it might stretch out the neckline

17)When someone takes a parking spot from me- Regardless if they see me waiting for it, they go right ahead and steal the one parking spot available and won't think twice about doing it. Right in front of my face.

Why do people steal spots? Not enough spots, lack of courtesy on their part, they might not have seen me, they're in a rush more than I am.

18)A full email inbox- checking my email is part of my routine, I feel disorganized and out of sync if my email is full, let alone I know about it.

Why does my email inbox get full? Many company's are trying to alert me of sales or coupons they have to offer, sometimes it's important stuff from important people, or I have shipping confirmation from something I  ordered, or it's just spam

19)Ordering something online and it looks nothing like the pictures they sold me on

Why do they sell misleading products? They may just be that poorly made, they may be selling false hopes with intent

20)When my phone service/connection is bad- It seems no matter who you have as a provider there's always some limitations as to how good your service quality is. Whether is your location or the building your in there always seems to be something that ruins your connection.

Why does this happen? Location, buildings, provider/carrier

I found the bug list to be somewhat of a challenge. I think the first 4 were definitely the easiest to come up with and think about. Everything after required some more thought to them and I definitely needed more time for them. Overall the assignment was very interesting and thought provoking. I do have a lot of things that bug me in my everyday life & I think it was very useful in pointing them out. I also found that explaining why they happen is often a step i do not even attempt when the bug happens in real life.

  1. Hey Josh,
I could relate to so many of your bugs! Just the other day I ordered a wallet on Amazon that looked so cool and high tech. I should have known something was fishy because it was only $12. When I received the wallet it had a plastic covering that peeled off the design I liked so much. Thank you for sharing.

  2. Hey josh, as you did i also got the first few easy then came to realize that there are a lot of common everyday issues that we all run into daily. One of the ones i did not even think of that you did was ads on things, they are the worst. And traffic at 5, will traffic ever be okay at 5, probably never!! Also unnecessary emails are a burden when you have to weave through them to find important ones.
