Idea Napkin

Currently, I am a student and also an employee for one of the largest companies in the world- Nike. By balancing both school and my job, I find myself to be more organized, more focused, and more driven than the majority of my peers. Both school and my job have influenced the way i approach problems such as climate change, more specifically, how climate change affects agriculture. If i were to start my business today, I see myself being totally consumed by it. I would constantly be tweaking the execution of my product and also making it more efficient.
I aspire to offer customers, mainly farmers, a man-made soil that adapts to the increase in temperature therefore, aiding in crop production. My soil will offer better circumstances for plant growth, provide key nutrients, and also refuse to let climate conditions prevent its crops from flourishing.
Customers will choose my soil over other competitors because they care about the planet. This soil is for everyone who is on board with acknowledging and aiming to prevent any additional global warming. Furthermore, farmers who literally cannot afford to let climate change affect their crops or their bank accounts would wisely choose my soil in attempt to better their own profit.
My business is different from current soil companies, because not only is there additional nutrients for the plants, but it is also climate retardant and good for the Earth. Now obviously soil is good for the Earth, thats not what i'm saying, I'm saying my soil will get us back to the natural state the world was in before we started digging our own graves.

Solving the Problem

My selected problem I've hypothesized is that climate change as effected the agriculture production of crops. More specifically the crops of soybeans and corn. Ultimately this as lead to an increase in cost for farmers, grocery stores, and customers as well.

I believe there could be some sort of soil made that adapts to climate change. Perhaps a soil that remains cooler when the excessive heat is present. It could hold water moisture underground better while maintaining the essential nutrients plants need to grow. This would evade the global warming crisis as a result of our greenhouse gas and ultimately save money for all customers, farmers, and grocery stores.

Testing the Hypothesis Part 1

Opportunity: Climate Change
Who: Farmers
What: Farmers are unable to successfully produce sufficient numbers of corn and soybeans when
temperatures rise above 84 degrees Fahrenheit
Why: Warmer temperatures throw off growing patterns of farmers, and change the environment that               corn and soybeans are used to growing at which increases food prices.

-There are other "who's" to my opportunity. Farmers, Grocery Stores, Restaurants, Customers, will all pay more for corn and soybeans (along with corn and soybean based products) as a result of climate change. Yes they all share the same want for a change or hault to climate change because it is costing them more money.
-What regions are the crops growing? What are the temperatures on average? Is it just corn and soybeans or is there other crops? What crops, if any, benefit from climate change? What farming practices are currently being used?
-The people who all share the need (previously stated) all wish to make money more efficiently. Climate change throws obstacles in the growing of the two crops that previously weren't as escalated. Overtime, as our carbon footprint increased, they've seen that they're unable to make the same dollar as easily due to increased measures demanded of them now that temperatures have risen. Customers are the one exception who are on the other side of the spectrum who wish to save that extra dollar charged of them because of climate change. All wish to save money, but customers are the only ones who are unable to make money. They have the same needs however.

Interviews
1) I interviewed my Uncle who used to be an agricultural science teacher. I asked him his thoughts and he explained to me that every crop is different. Some plants are suited for warmer weather and others are not. This is why various plants grow only in specific regions of the world. He also elaborated how temperature can increase the amount of labor needed to harvest the needed number by demanders. I then asked him how he feels about the matter as a customer, to which he went into further detail. He reminded me we often times do not see what it takes to harvest these crops until there's a problem in regards to detail or quality of what is being harvested. It takes us doing research on what we consume to find out the truth. He mentioned the customer doesn't have a clue how much shipping is for x amount of pounds of corn. Or how long it takes for corn to be harvested. Or field rotation. He says stuff like that is why farmers are still essential to society today despite their absence in the economy.
Prior to the interview I had no idea that farmers rotate crops on different fields. I also did not think about how little customers know about their food unless we research it. It made me rethink my consumption and also made me think about how big of a factor money is in our lives. Yes, I want to save money on corn and soybeans despite not knowing how they are harvested or grown.

2) I interviewed a friends' parents who own their own restaurant. They were more than happy to talk about how they shop for products and how they feel the impact as well. They mentioned often times, products like limes (essential for a Mexican restaurant) are often times expensive so they grocery shop at different stores for products. They also elaborated about how an increase in things such as limes, put them in a predicament. When prices of groceries go up, they ultimately make less profit because they put more out, but their prices are set. They mentioned how it looks unprofessional to constantly change your price on people despite not making the same profit they could be making.
Prior to this, I hadn't thought about shopping at different stores for different groceries. I often just buy it anyways because for whatever reason I assume every grocery store pays the same shipping and handling cost when that is not the case.

3)I interviewed a friend of mine also as a customer to get her perspective on climate change also. She stated that she believes there is a drastic need for change in order to prolong our time on the Earth. She mentioned things such as hurricanes in the past and currently things such as the Australian forest fires. She said she doesn't mind paying more for things that help the climate as long as help is being delivered. She also feels the rise in price of crops and things and understands the logistics behind it all. However, as a customer she wishes a change would occur so that nobody as to go through the constant fluctuating of prices.

4) I asked my teacher if he could share his thoughts on the matter as well. He said he doesn’t necessarily believe if climate change is 100% truthful. He feel Florida had a great winter this season in the past and argues that it was colder than previous years. He also mentioned how natural disasters are simply that-natural. I asked him if he thought things such as hurricanes and fires could be avoided to which he explained how he thought they can be avoided by humans but not the Earth.

To a certain extent I almost let myself believe some of what he said. They are natural disasters for a reason, but I still believe the scale at which they are occurring at is like nothing before.

5) Lastly, I asked google a series of questions to gather more research. I wanted to know the statistics behind the argument for climate change to which i learned, that forest fires as increased by nearly 400%. Since the Industrial Revolution, our oceans have become 30% more acidic. Perhaps the most astonishing fact, was that the wealthiest 1 billion people emit 60% of our greenhouse gas, while the poorest 3 billion produce only 5%.

Identifying Opportunities in Economic and Regulatory Trends

Economic Trend Opportunities
1) "Climate Change Causing Natural Disasters"
2) Source:https://www.thebalance.com/top-usa-future-economic-trends-3305666
3) I believe an opportunity exist being that there is scientific evidence that suggests the globes' climate is changing. From the increase in wildfires, to the decrease in the presence of our ice caps, the climate is responsible for drastic changes to various environments. Furthermore, there's been an increase in catastrophic hurricanes, earthquakes. floods, etc. They also elaborate on how a lot of human activity is solely responsible for the rise in our greenhouse gases and how it effects markets such as our food (example: corn and soybean production suffers in weather above 84 degrees Fahrenheit)
4) I feel anybody who acknowledges climate change is a potential customer. They will all benefit from advancements that reduces our carbon footprints. As mentioned, farmers will benefit from a cooler Earth. Environmentalist will benefit from advancements as well as the next generation.
5) Overall, I'd say this is a relative easy opportunity to exploit, just because there are so many angles or things people can do to help. Even awareness of your everyday action and minimal changes on everyone's parts will lead to changes we all will feel.
6) Living in Florida, we definitely experience issues with climate change every season. For instance, our summers may be the hottest they've ever been. Shortly after we have hurricane season. Followed by a warm winter. I feel my location as made me experience firsthand the effects of climate change, but also the effects of the disasters it may cause such as hurricanes. Someone who live elsewhere in the United States, may not experience this and ultimately may not hear of it. Also, there are some people who refuse to believe in climate change because it benefits their business such as oil companies. I believe my home has shown me many elements to climate change that others have not had the chance or opportunity to feel.

1) "Baby Boomers Aren’t Retiring"
2) Source:https://www.thebalance.com/top-usa-future-economic-trends-3305666
3) I believe an opportunity exists because there are two sides of the coin that face a problem here. For example, the Baby boomer generation, is forced to work due to the recession which keeps them in the way of Millennials. Neither, Baby Boomers or Millennials wish for this because it impacts both their livelihoods. For instance, Baby Boomers must work longer and Millennials cope to the new reality that the standard careers are going to be harder to crack into, and therefore must create new jobs or adapt their lifestyle.
4) I feel the main customer is Millennials. Whatever entrepreneur creates the solution, the Millennial generation would most likely feel it the most, and feel it instantly just based off their age. They're at the point in their lives where is something were to hit the market, they have the ability to change and start over without drastically changing their lives for the worst. Furthermore, the younger generations would feel it as well, because it would open up jobs for them in the future, contrasting the cycle baby boomers are currently in.
5) Unfortunately, I do feel this is a hard opportunity to exploit. I can't even think of ways to get a generation of people to change the way they live or the see their current living experience as bad. It would also take time and require a lot of people to change which is without a doubt, an extremely difficult task to accomplish.
6) Again, I think i see the opportunity because I am part of a totally new, third-party generation who (as of right now) isn't really feeling to many effects because of this. I can see how millennials can neglect this fact because of their everyday lives and the adaptations they've acquired. I can also see how, baby boomers know they want to retire, but feel obligated to work due to the recession.

Regulatory Opportunities
1) Gun control
2)Source: https://gun-control.procon.org/
3) I believe a major opportunity exists in the case of gun control. Everybody is effected by the presence of guns, which is why its a constitutional right. Furthermore there are those that believe little change, if any, is needed to the current gun situation despite recent school and other mass shootings. On the other hand, there are many people (large amounts of victims) who are calling for change in order to change the nature of the past several years. There's again, two parties who want one thing, however a compromise or solution may resolve the matter for everyone.
4) I think those who want a change to the 2nd amendment will benefit the most because no matter the solution, it will come across as a solution to prevent mass shootings and change a current situation some feel is already fine. It will always feel like those who support the 2nd amendment are giving up their rights or compromising.
5) Again, I feel this is a rather difficult one to exploit. You're dealing with attempting to modify or adjust the constitution as a result of tragic events that unfortunately not everyone can see. It's more than just inventing the perfect tool, it requires a change in our nation's founding principles that a majority of people are already against.
6) I feel my age is the biggest reason for me seeing things the way i see them in regards to this matter. For instance, I just recently graduated from public schools where a large majority of these shootings transpired. Its a different mind set when its kids your age pulling the trigger on other people your age, Furthermore, it appears that my generation is leading the way for change which is another reason we all share (mostly) common standpoints in regards to gun control.

1) Immigration
2) Source:https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2020/02/06/trump-dhs-blocks-new-york-drivers-global-entry-trusted-traveler/4676815002/
3) Immigration is a large opportunity for immigrants to become citizens. It allows people to start a new, improved life here in America. However, it seems that every other president has a different look than the last when it comes to the matter. Currently, we've seen things such as a wall attempt to prevent illegal immigration. However, that act alone leaves the door for opportunity open. What if there was a better system in place to allow illegal immigrants to become legal? There's a million ways to attack this and is why there's a major opportunity for the matter.
4) Immigrants benefit the most from this because it's allowing them to come to America and start over or escape their previous homes' conditions. Also, American citizens benefit in a way. For one we don't have to fund excessive things like a wall. We also receive an increase in the labor force which increases our global production.
5) The opportunity itself is a fairly easy one to exploit I feel. It simply requires a change in mind state that at-least attempts to work with immigrants as opposed to forcing them out.
6) Furthermore, coming from a family of immigrants, I do see the matter a with a little bias. I feel many people forget about the American Dream and also neglect the definition or background of an "American"

Identifying Local Opportunities

1) Title of article: "Home Sales Surge"
- Article Link:https://www.newseum.org/todaysfrontpages/?tfp_display=gallery&tfp_region=USA&tfp_sort_by=state&tfp_state_letter=F&tfp_id=FL_DBNJ
 - Relators in Florida, specifically Flagler and Volusia county, have sold more homes this past     December and have shattered previous records for the month. This has led to an increase in migration and ultimately an increase in population for both counties.
- As you can see, with more homes being bought, communities in Flagler and Volusia county see an increase in population which results in things such as; increase in traffic, increase in student population which leads to an unmet increase in demand of teachers, increase in demand for homes and future homes, and also potentially an increase in crime.
- I would say that the county officials have a foreseeable problem the more their population increase. With more people in your county, the more development and upkeep is required of you to maintain needs and demands. Also, the county schools have an issue already with the lack of teacher. However, with more people migrating, the student population increase which puts pressure on the already low number of teachers available. The need of teachers also increase. The more teachers and students may lead to the need for a new school which goes hand-in-hand with development and maintenance of the county. Furthermore, traffic will definitely increase as well. So, everybody that commutes to work from Volusia/Flagler will feel the increase in number of cars on the road.

2) Title of article: "Rifles Stolen From Bass Pro Shops; results in 7 arrested"
- Article Link: https://www.newseum.org/todaysfrontpages/?tfp_display=gallery&tfp_region=USA&tfp_sort_by=state&tfp_state_letter=F&tfp_id=FL_SLNT
- According to the St.Lucie Tribune, 7 individuals crashed into a Bass Pro shop with a U-haul truck, in order to steal firearms, before fleeing the scene onto interstate 95. 7 people were arrested.
- The story depicts burglary in action as well as organized crime in a Port St.Lucie neighborhood. The theft of guns can lead one to assume that an even bigger crime could've have been a motive. It shows that organized crime is still in today's society as well as the good ol' fashioned car chase. Furthermore, it shows that shopping malls are deemed a safe place for family outings when in fact they are not.
- Many people have an issue in this story. For instance, Police have to respond to the crime and risk their lives over people trying to steal firearms from a Bass Pro shop. The workers at Bass Pro had their lives at stake. That store in particular now has the incident attached to their reputation and although it was out of their hands, it still is a deterrent to customers. The mall also has to stress now the safety of customers and other stores because of this scenario. Maybe they increase security camera or the presence of guards and this costs them some extra money. U-haul also has it's image at stake being that it doesn't necessarily want its name in the press when it comes to ramming vehicles into the side of a Bass Pro shop to commit burglary. The county has a problem with its overall safety and economy. The more crime the county goes through, the less people are going to wish to live there in the middle of all it and the more likely they are to find somewhere else to live- perhaps Flagler or Volusia county even. Those in support of the 2nd amendment have problem because not only are guns a heavy topic of debate because of how they're used, but now, arguably you can say, the presence of guns can lead to crime over people attempting to get them.

3) Title of article: "Sentence Him... So My Daughter Gets Justice"
- Article Link:https://www.newseum.org/todaysfrontpages/?tfp_display=gallery&tfp_region=USA&tfp_sort_by=state&tfp_state_letter=F&tfp_id=FL_NP
- A father and mother lost their daughter due to a teenager unlicensed driving. The teen was without a license, speeding 2x the speed limit (86mph), and high when he hit their daughter at 8am as he was skipping school. The matter escalated in the courtroom to which the teen pleaded guilty.
- The problem in the story is that a team of parents lost their daughter due to a teenager's poor decision making behind the wheel. They lose their daughter and he pleads guilty.
- The parents obviously have the biggest problem here as they are no without their daughter. The teenager faces a sentence or punishment of some sort. The teenager's parents must then pay for court over something their son irresponsibly did. The court must they house the situation and listen to the case costing everybody time and money. Cops have paperwork to file. The school of the teen may be scrutinized for having the teen skip school. Whoever’s granted him access to a car is at fault her as well because they should have known he was without a license. Hospital bills become a problem for the victims family as well as funeral costs. The people living in the community have a problem because they no longer know how safe their neighborhood is or how safe their high schooler is.

4) Title of article: "Planning for Drastic Change"
- Article Link:https://www.newseum.org/todaysfrontpages/?tfp_display=gallery&tfp_region=USA&tfp_sort_by=state&tfp_state_letter=F&tfp_id=FL_CCC
- West Cardinal residents are up-in-the-air about wether or not the new interstate will be beneficial or harmful for them
- The new parkway is dividing residents. For instance, some residents are against the idea of a highway being thrown up in their backyard, while others show support for the convenience of the idea. The Florida Highway will also have to consider bother options.
- Residents who choose West Cardinal to retire will have a problem with the interstate being that it ruins the retired lifestyle for them. They do not wish for traffic right outside their house and ultimately are against the idea. Residents who are in favor now have to debate and prove that the interstate is in fact, a good idea in order to get the exit they desire. The Florida Highway will have the problem of choosing who to listen to, or with finding a compromise. Traffic problems will also remain how they are until the matter is sorted out, and traffic problems in the future will increase if the project receives the go-ahead. Police Officers will have the problem of monitoring traffic as well as the problem of maintaining road safety throughout the construction. Also, the people in charge of developing/scouting lanes for highway addition may have to relocate their creative energy to a new direction if this doesn't go through. The state also has to fund the project so its costing them money,

5)Title of Article: " Commander hopes to get public back on base soon"
- Article Link:https://www.newseum.org/todaysfrontpages/?tfp_display=gallery&tfp_region=USA&tfp_sort_by=state&tfp_state_letter=F&tfp_id=FL_PNJ
- Months after a lieutenant opened fire on an Air Force base in Pensacola, Captain Tim Kensella believes it is best if the base returns to original shape and reopens itself to the public. The shooting resulted in 3 deaths and 8 other wounded and since then the base as seen security and FBI activity.
- Obviously, the deaths of our nations' finest is a major problem for all of us. The base as then had to deal with the tragedy as opposed to doing what they would normally, and the spotlight being on them really impacts their day-to-day jobs. Right now, the commander is trying to regain focus and get his base back the way it was as quickly as possible.
- The commander must deal with the media (like the reporter for the article), he must cooperate with the FBI and other agencies that are investigating, and he must lead those on base, so he has a lot of problems. The base as to deal with getting back to the way things were, but also they mourn the loss of their coworkers/brothers. Those in support of the 2nd amendment know that this doesn't look to great for them whenever they present their views or beliefs. We as country lost members of our military on our own turf because of someone on our side. The victims' parents have an issue with the deaths/injury of their sons and/or daughters.

Forming and Opportunity Belief

A) My belief or superstition is that the mainstream fast food drive thru experience is outdated, and that through technology restaurants can speed up service times.

B)My belief is that technology such as touch screens, will eliminate the complicated communication between drive thru worker, and customer. For instance, we've all had the order that was wrong. Or we've had to wait for the cashier to reopen the window just to ask for that extra sauce packet we feel they deprived us of. The unmet need is that societies' current drive thru experience causes confusion and can often lead to dissatisfaction amongst customers. This need is for any body who eats fast food, specially the younger generation because studies show they typically eat the most fast food. Also, mother's with a van full of children who's best bet would be to go through the drive thru instead of taking all their kids inside with them. Fast food store operators and workers need better efficiency so this benefits them as well. It benefits the company by keeping them up to date with other societal needs in terms of efficiency. Currently, companies such as Chick-Fil-A have workers outside with iPads taking orders which is almost close enough, however, it's basically the same thing as having two drive thru lines. It just speeds up the payment process, which is great for the company, but not drastically better for the consumer. Also, McDonald's displays the self-ordering touch screen station inside their restaurant. The same idea can easily be applied to drive thru and would allow the customer to customize their orders to their needs, as well as type in any special request that the cooks can then make for them. Also, the idea of a double lane drive thru is a fairly new idea as well, so that two as further advanced the fast food experience. As of right now i'm 75% sure that this need is in fact needed and that it can also be implemented.

Ci) Prototypical customer 1: Skylar Freeman
Skylar is a coworker of mine who is very persistent when making sure her order is correct. She's called corporate on managers before, and has even gotten $8.66 refunded to her front door because of her order being unsatisfied. My first question was what was her worst drive thru experience to date. She answered that she just recently, had a order that was totally wrong due to miscommunication on the companies' end. She then called the store to see if there was anything they could do to which a manager laughed and said "Boy you sure love to complain". I then asked her how much was customer service when it came to eating fast food to which she responded, "Very". Unfortunately she also told me, she will never go back to that specific store because of her most recent interaction with a manager. She mentioned how it "sucks" that the nearest store other then that one is too far to go for her lunch breaks, the time she eats there the most, and how one person's attitude can make you think twice before supporting people like that. She also mentioned how she came to the decision to choose to call instead of going in or back through the drive thru. "Well one, I was on my lunch break, so I was already crunched for time. Also, that place gets PACKED during lunch hours so I was not about to waste my time, off the clock, for a matter that can be easily fixed over the phone. I've seen it done before"

Cii) Prototypical customer 2: Hector Romero
I used to work at Chick-Fil-A with Hector back when I was in high school. He used to be a chef and has been in a kitchen for the majority of his life. He has over 20 years in the food industry and was our store's kitchen manager. He concerned everything from food safety to procedures, and also stressed efficiency. I asked him the billion dollar question "Why does Chick-Fil-A get so busy, especially on Saturdays" to which he responded, "It has a lot to do with how good your back of house team (those in the kitchen) is and also how well your drive-thru team is at getting orders out, but also doing them correctly". He then reminded me that the desired speed of service time is under 2 minutes max, and that includes the food being in the hands of the customer in that time. I also asked him how effective the iPad setup Chick-Fil-A currently uses is compared to the days before. "Honestly they speed up the payment process which allows the consumer to then get the food and go, but there's still hiccups that do occur. For instance, if someone's card is not working, they hold up the line. Or if it's raining we can't have workers out there regardless. So even then, the whole thing isn't full proof". I asked him the total estimation as to how many orders they have gotten wrong and also how much they've lost financially because of it. He stated, " Although I can't disclose the exact amount, I do know that at Chick-Fil-A we pride ourselves on order accuracy. It does happen unfortunately and we try to do right by our customers by offering meal coverage or coupons for their bad experience. However, we also know that some customers take advantage of Chick-Fil-A's kindness and can stretch out the exact value of their meal for the price of maybe half of what they get. Our numbers probably don't represent the right dollar amount for everything on our end."

Ciii) Prototypical Customer 3: Allyson Dodd
Allyson is a close friend of mine. She's that one person who's got all the apps and all the reward memberships with all her favorite stores and places to eat. I asked her how often she uses the apps to which she mentioned she tries to use them every-time she goes to one of the places that offer, and also stated that it isn't hard because she often goes in with the mindset that she's going to use the app. She also told me she has apps such as Starbucks, Chick-fil-A, Nike, and also McDonald's. How often do you get rewards I asked to which she mentioned that all apps are different. "For instance, Chick-Fil-A offers points I can earn every time I order and then redeem for a meal. Starbucks allows me to pay through the app, earn points and earn either a beverage or even somethings like a cup. Nike allows me to earn discounts every time I scan my app at checkout."

D) Through Skylar, I learned that customer service is still a big deal breaker for many customers. My belief however, removes an additional employee from the current method so ultimately, customer service would decline. Is this good or bad? I think it depends on the person ordering to be honest. For instance, customers still have the opportunity to get customer service by going inside. This would ideally separate the two types of customers and will inevitably speed up the drive thru- if only it was that easy. I also learned through Skylar, that humans still make mistakes in this day and age. It's inevitable. By having a touch screen drive thru, it eliminates possibility for human error as far as transmission of the customer's order. Through Hector, I learned that companies do lose out on messed up orders and that it happens more than they'd like it to. This keeps the door open for my idea because it fixes a problem they have and also costs them financially. Lastly, Allyson highlights the potential of the future when it comes to fast food. The apps and rewards programs shows that businesses are headed towards a more advanced and evolved way of dealing with customers outside the store. So why not advance customer interaction at the store. Through the interview I learned that my idea still has a chance, but it definitely requires changes. For instance, Hector mentioned rained and thats something my belief would also have to combat. I also liked the idea that Starbucks allows payment through the app, and maybe thats something we could implement into our drive thru experience that would enhance speed.

E) I would say a large majority of my original idea is still there. The idea that I would like to speed up drive thrus by use of touch screen ordering is still there. Its just how my machines would work under heavy usage, weather, and updating that I originally did not factor into my thought process. I don't know that my end is more accurate than my beginning. I would argue that its more precise being that it identified obstacles and also drew on customer data to better itself for the day it may find itself in use. I think entrepreneurs struggle with the trade off between staying firm and adapting based off of how much they thought of themselves when thinking of their opportunity. For instance, I hope to never find myself back at another fast food chain in my life so, this opportunity doesn't really effect me personally and that may be the reason i'm willing to adapt and conform. After all, i'm looking for ways to better society's drive thru. However, people such as Elon Musk and his billion dollar company Tesla is totally different. His reputation is all over Tesla's DNA. When he broke the cybertruck's window, people laughed at both the truck and Elon. He's out to better the world but also his image as an inventor. Ultimately I would like to think of a way to revolutionize the way we think of fast food. After all, the idea fast food revolutionized the way we originally thought of food.

Entrepreneurship Story

Having worked for nike for over a year now, I've had the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the man behind the brand Mr.Phil Knight. I got into the company through my aunt, who has a much bigger role in Nike than I, a cashier, do. She had gotten a call to head down to Beaverton, Oregon, where headquarters are located for a meeting of all store managers, and offered to take me up there. Obviously, I would have no part in the meeting, but as an employee, Nike offers the opportunity to tour the headquarters also known as "campus". The place is enormous and the buildings are of course state of the art. As a tour member, we're advised not to act out in any way when seeing a Nike athlete and to leave them unbothered. I obviously, was picturing seeing someone such as Lebron James or maybe even Serena Williams. Instead, I seen someone much larger in terms of Nike hierarchy- the founder. It was really brief, and I won't embellish it into something it was not, I simply saw Phil Knight grab a cup of coffee and walk out a side door. That was it. My aunt actually saw him first and pointed him out and I froze and stared at the man. I remembered how to act, but man was it hard. For someone who's into sneakers and sports and just about everything Nike this was monumental. I was astonished and literally stood still and watched a stranger fill his cup of morning joe, before heading onto much bigger and better things. I ultimately wished I could have snagged a picture with him or at least gotten a handshake, but nonetheless this made the trip to campus worth-it.

I chose to enroll in ENT3003 because yes, it is part of my major requirements, but also because it is something that interests me. All throughout high school, I struggled with deciding a major while everyone else I knew seemed to have already have their whole life planned out ahead of them. Also, no matter where I seemed to look I would see people like Elon Musk or companies such as Nike or heck, even Kanye West, introduce something that people get excited over and talk about. For some reason, this always interested me and is the major reason I chose to take this course.

Bug List

Bug List

1) Pennies- The idea that one cent is crucial to our economy is pretty outrageous. Especially,
when the rest of our coins are divisible by 5. There's way too many of them in production, and most people don't even value them. In fact, they throw them either on the street or in fountains for the heck of it. Simply put, pennies are a waste of copper that are of little value to the American citizen and make my life, as a cashier, that much harder.

Why do pennies exist? Truthfully, the only argument going for pennies is precision. They provide us with a more precise way of counting money. They also showcase honest Abe in all his glory, which is cool I guess but quite frankly, I can do without.

2)Soap pumps/dispensers that don't pump the leftover soap at the bottom- This really applies to all dispensers that don't supply me with all the soap that I paid for. Instead, the little amount that is at the bottom doesn't get used or I have to take the dispenser nozzle out and wait for gravity to do its trick and make the soap fall.

Why do soap pumps ineffectively pump ALL the soap? I think its because they only have one entry tube for the soap that lies vertically so if any of the soap goes to a corner or side (which it does, it always does) then they're a loss cause.

3)Apple iPhone charger chord fraying- The more I use a phone charger the more damage I seem to cause. It happens to every charger I use and the wires always end up exposed no matter how hard I try. Nonetheless, I'm pretty sure its a safety hazard.

Why do iPhone charger chords fray? The part that frays is the closest to the part that goes into the phone. It frays because the material bends and overtime the rubber or whatever wears out and exposes the wire.

4)The bread bag ties- The little things that are so hard to keep track of that wrap around to seal the bag. Also, I can never tell which way they're going and often times I don't use them again I just twist the bag tight.

Why are bread bag ties used? They help keep the bread fresh and delay the time it takes for mold to set in, but honestly I think Ziploc would do the trick

5)Wide ruled paper- In all my years of schooling, I have never been required to use wide ruled paper. It has always been college ruled and i'm not even sure why someone would prefer wide ruled over college ruled. It's something that I mistakenly purchase only when I need college ruled and I don't see why different space size is required.

Why does wide ruled paper exist? Wide ruled paper exists for people with big handwriting
in order to help their handwriting cleanliness and appearance.

6)When my shower runs out of hot water- It totally ruins a shower when you no longer have control over the water temperature.

Why do showers run out of hot water- the water heater just doesn't have that large of a supply of hot water. Over use of hot water.

7)Traffic time on the Turnpike- Nobody like 5 o'clock traffic and it happens everyday regardless of where your coming from. It just eats up time and prevents you from getting to where you're supposed to be by the time you're supposed to be there.

Why does 5 o'clock traffic happen everyday? Thats the time most people get out of work, and they all plan on going to their home or the store or picking up their kid.

8)The entire Love-bug community- truthfully speaking, if there is one species on the entire planet we could wipe out- this would be the one. They do literally nothing and are seasonal bugs for a reason.

Why do Love-bugs exist? I guess they are food to some other animal, they're a part in keeping the ecosystem stable.

9)Bathroom door handles/locks that don't say occupied or vacant- There really needs to be more of these things that way no one has to have that awkward encounter of walking in on someone.

Why don't all bathroom handles have the occupied/vacant sign? Aesthetics is really why places don't display them

10)Lack of cashiers at target- the amount of checkout lanes they have drastically outnumbers the amount of eligible cashiers they have. It's honestly misleading, and gives us target customers false hope.

Why are there never enough cashiers at target? Job specialization, maybe only a hand full of employees are chosen to lear the registers. Zone coverage may be planned out poorly.

11)YouTube ads lying about the amount of ads- its bad enough I have to watch ads as it is, but it's 10x worse getting surprised with extra ads after already watching the required amount.

Why ads? I get that it's a paid sponsorship and thats why there's ads in the first place, but honestly I think it's just a glitch

12) How Starbucks calls orders out by name- It can easily lead to confusion if people share the same name or if the employees misspell/can't pronounce what they wrote. The number system just seems simpler to me

Why do they call names? I can only see them justifying that it makes the experience more personal

13) When one airpod dies and the other one doesn't- This happens all the time even though i use them both the same amount of time and they spend the same time together in the same charging case

Why does one always die? It could be a manufacturing problem, maybe i'm not placing them in the case correctly (although I think I am), could be someone else coming along and only using one of my airpods when i'm unaware of it

14) When someone's driving in my direction with their high-beams on- really annoying and makes my drive at night, that much more difficult

Why do people drive with their high-beams on towards traffic? Maybe they really cannot see the road, they might be unaware of it, they might just decide thats how they wish to see the road at night and not care or think of the other drivers

15) When my socks get wet- Whenever it rains and my shoes get wet, or i step in a puddle, or a puddle gets splashed on me and inevitably my socks get soaked. Not only does my shoe get ruined on the outside, but also on the inside so its really 2 birds with 1 stone

Why do my socks get wet? I wasn't equipped with proper shoes or I was wearing high socks and they were exposed to the water

16)Hangers stretching out the necks of shirts- Its one of those things were it depends on the shirt I know, but it also seems to happen to the shirts i least expect it too.

Why do hangers stretch out the neckline? The shirt may be damp and put out to dry or if you pull too much on a shirt to take it down it might stretch out the neckline

17)When someone takes a parking spot from me- Regardless if they see me waiting for it, they go right ahead and steal the one parking spot available and won't think twice about doing it. Right in front of my face.

Why do people steal spots? Not enough spots, lack of courtesy on their part, they might not have seen me, they're in a rush more than I am.

18)A full email inbox- checking my email is part of my routine, I feel disorganized and out of sync if my email is full, let alone I know about it.

Why does my email inbox get full? Many company's are trying to alert me of sales or coupons they have to offer, sometimes it's important stuff from important people, or I have shipping confirmation from something I  ordered, or it's just spam

19)Ordering something online and it looks nothing like the pictures they sold me on

Why do they sell misleading products? They may just be that poorly made, they may be selling false hopes with intent

20)When my phone service/connection is bad- It seems no matter who you have as a provider there's always some limitations as to how good your service quality is. Whether is your location or the building your in there always seems to be something that ruins your connection.

Why does this happen? Location, buildings, provider/carrier

I found the bug list to be somewhat of a challenge. I think the first 4 were definitely the easiest to come up with and think about. Everything after required some more thought to them and I definitely needed more time for them. Overall the assignment was very interesting and thought provoking. I do have a lot of things that bug me in my everyday life & I think it was very useful in pointing them out. I also found that explaining why they happen is often a step i do not even attempt when the bug happens in real life.
